Today, MPs will meet in Parliament to debate the implementation of the UK Strategy for Rare Diseases in England. This is a unique opportunity for us to raise awareness of the problems facing patients and families affected by rare conditions in accessing a timely diagnosis, coordinated care and appropriate treatment.

In spring last year SRUK awarded its first research grants, following on from the work of the Raynaud’s and Scleroderma Association and Scleroderma Society, which had been supporting research into both conditions in this way since the 1980s.

Dan Muscat, 49, developed systemic scleroderma in 2014, in which the skin all over his body began to harden and tighten due to the overproduction of collagen. An experimental stem-cell treatment has meant a "180-degree" turn in Dan's symptoms.

Raynaud’s attacks, usually triggered by the cold causing a lack of blood flow to the extremities, are often mild and manageable; however diving into cold water may cause problems.
