We launched our first ever Virtual Relay Walk to mark Scleroderma Awareness Month and had a terrific response from our community who have picked up their batons, completed their walks and are still helping us get to our £19,000 target - we have some way to go, but we know with your help we'll make it.
The SRUK Virtual Relay Walk was inspired by Una Gillespie's fundraising and her brilliant 40km walk at home - read more about Una's fundraising below #SRUKVirtualRelay.
Una walked 10km around the perimeter of her house every Saturday for 4 weeks. She has Diffuse Scleroderma which affects her skin and internal organs including her lungs – so this really was a challenge for Una. She showed amazing spirit – motivated by her goal to help us fund research, information and support and her aim to set up a support group in Northern Ireland. Una smashed her original £250 target and raised over £5,850. She recruited friends and family to walk virtually with her - and this inspired us to keep the walking going and launch the SRUK Virtual Relay.
Sara became a home hero when when she picked up the baton and completed the SRUK Virtual Relay. Sara walked 10k with her fiance Alistair to help us mark Scleroderma Awareness Month, raising £420 and smashing her £100 target. Sara said, "my walk was windy, sunny, rainy and we had to battle our way through some pretty hefty foliage, over tree roots and some inquisitive cows - but it was good fun". This was a personal achievement too as Sara has systemic scleroderma which causes significant stiffness and pain in her joints.
Friends Emily and Zoe made a formidable home fundraising when they walked Hangers Way in Hampshire to help raise funds for scleroderma. Their fundraising was inspired by Zoe's mother who was diagnosed two years ago and Emily's younger sister who has been living with the condition for three years. Not only did Emily and Zoe complete their walk, but they smashed their fundraising target of £1,200 and raised over £2,738!

The 2.6 Challenge was launched by the organisers of London Marathon 2020 due to the event being postponed. To get involved, fundraisers could take on any activity using the numbers 26 or 2.6 and create their own personal challenge.
Nicki had been shielding since lockdown, so her 2.6 Challenge was a stay-at-home challenge to keep safe and well. She completed 26 mins of exercise every day for 26 days by walking in her small garden, practising yoga and following online exercise classes.
This was a massive personal achievement for Nicki as she has scleroderma and finds her body can go against her – but Nicki persevered and raised a total of £1,028.
Our youngest 2.6 Challengers were Callum, aged 10, and his younger brother Jacob, aged 6. They both completed the 2.6 Challenge in memory of their grandad who had battled scleroderma for most of his life. Callum ran 260 laps of his home garden and Jacob joined the challenge by running up and down the stairs 260 times.

Before the Coronavirus pandemic, our running teams had been fundraising and training hard for their races. With so many running events cancelled this year, some of our runners have shown their support by running solo, virtual runs - at home or in their local area.
We are so grateful to our runners for their dedication and support during these unprecedented times and for being our running home heroes #TeamSRUK.
Emma Reynolds was planning to run the Liverpool Rock n Roll Half Marathon but the race was postponed. Emma wanted to find a way to keep fundraising for SRUK during the lockdown so decided to complete the full half marathon on her own by running a local route near her home. Emma's fundraising at home meant she could continue fundraising in memory of her Nana who had scleroderma and Raynaud's and was able to raise £171 of her £200 target.
Before lockdown, Caitriona ran the Hampton Court Half Marathon, but with so many races being cancelled she wanted to also show her support and continue fundraising for SRUK during the pandemic. Caitriona ran an incredible 50 miles in a week - running in memory of her Aunty Mary who had scleroderma and Raynaud's. Caitriona is now intending to do more home fundraising and is planning to run the Mid-Sussex Virtual Race.
Sisters Connie and Stacey will be running the London Marathon in memory of Connie's mother-in-law Sharon. They have been fundraising during the pandemic, each running a mile a day during June to mark Scleroderma Awareness Month - they even completed their challenge with an overnight run on World Scleroderma Day.
Before joining forces with sister Stacey, Connie had been active with her own virtual runs and completed a solo marathon in her home city of Norwich. With a 6am start, Connie ran 26.6 miles and managed a time of 4hrs 57 minutes 57 seconds! If this wasn't enough, Connie fundraised again when she ran 50 laps on the green where she lives - supported by neighbours squirting water guns as she ran past their houses!
